چکیده

Seamless roaming between the third generation wireless networks and wireless local area networks can be provided using Mobile IP. However, 3GPP and 802.11-based networks have no native support for Mobile IP. Mobile IP requires the deployment of the home agents and a protocol between the mobile nodes, home agent and the corresponding nodes. We address the home agent placement and home address assignment issues for supporting Mobile IP in 3GPP and 802.11based networks. Placement techniques for Mobile IP home agents are presented including dynamic HA assignment in either WLAN or GPRS/UMTS domains using Diameter Mobile IP application. Next, we present several IPv4 home address assignment schemes for mobile nodes visiting in WLAN domain such as the mobile VPNs, NAT/NAPT traversal and reverse tunneling. It is shown that HA placement and address management are orthogonal and any combination is possible. Various architectures for both issues are evaluated against the optimal solutions.

Reliable Integrated Architecture for Heterogeneous Mobile and Wireless Networks

The major trend in next-generation or 4G wireless networks (NGWN/4G) is the coexistence of diverse but complementary architectures and wireless access technologies. In this context, an appropriate integration and interworking of existing wireless networks are crucial to allow seamless roaming across those networks. Several integrated architectures have been proposed for 3G cellular networks and...

Efficient 3G/WLAN Interworking Techniques for Seamless Roaming Services with Location-Aware Authentication

This paper proposes novel concepts and architectures for location-aware seamless authentication and roaming in the new interworking system between third-generation (3G) mobile networks and wireless local area networks (WLANs) where local mobility movements (micromobility) are handled together with global movements (macro-mobility). We introduce location as a key context in secure roaming mechan...

Fast Re-authentication for Efficient and Seamless Handover in 4g Networks

Wireless technologies such as the Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN), the Worldwide Interoperability for Micro wave Access (Wi-MAX), and the Third-Generation (3G) mobile communications system complement each other to support a variety of services suited for the home, urban, and global environments. As roaming users expect a seamless handover (HO) experience when switching from one wireless netw...

Integration of Wireless Lan and 3 G Wireless

Third-generation cellular systems will provide wide coverage and nearly universal roaming, but will not realistically live up to the bit rate expectations placed on them. On the other hand, WLAN systems already offer bit rates surpassing those of 3G systems, but are often found lacking with respect to roaming and mobility support. In short, WLAN systems are great for hot spot coverage, while 3G...

Vertical Handoff Characterization for SIP and mSCTP Based UMTS-WLAN Integration Solutions

It is desirable to integrate 3G Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) and 802.11 wireless local area networks, especially at hot-spot locations such as hotels and airports. The efficiency of wireless data services can be maximized if the integration provides users with seamless roaming across the two types of networks. Seamless handoff between these two networks to maintain session c...
